Payload Encapsulation Confirmed

Final preparations for the next Vega-C mission reached a critical milestone at Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana. According to ESA, the Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) and the Copernicus Sentinel-3C satellite are now officially sealed within the launcher’s protective fairing. This integration marks the final stage of ground processing before the stack is mated to the Vega-C rocket.

Dual-Mission Capability

The encapsulation process utilized the Vespa-C dispenser system, a dual-launch adapter designed specifically for the Vega-C. This configuration allows two distinct missions to share a single flight, optimizing launch costs and orbital delivery efficiency. Sentinel-3C occupied the upper position of the stack, while FLEX was secured in the lower compartment.

Earth Observation Objectives

Once in orbit, these satellites will provide unprecedented data on terrestrial health. FLEX is a specialized Earth Explorer mission designed to map global vegetation fluorescence. By detecting the faint reddish glow emitted by plants during photosynthesis, it will offer researchers a direct window into the actual productivity and health of the world's ecosystems.

Sentinel-3C represents the latest addition to the Copernicus program. It will ensure the continuity of high-precision measurements regarding sea-surface temperature, ocean color, and land-surface topography. According to ESA mission controllers, the integration went according to protocol, protecting the sensitive optics of both spacecraft from the atmospheric stresses of ascent. The fairing—the two-piece "nose cone" of the rocket—will jettison once the vehicle clears the dense layers of the atmosphere.

With the payload assembly now sealed and pressurized, the team is proceeding toward final transport to the launch pad.
