Vast Establishes Dedicated Lunar Programs Division
Space infrastructure firm Vast is expanding its reach beyond Low Earth Orbit, launching a three-phase lunar architecture to support NASA's Moon Base initiatives with modular habitats and communication networks.
VAST EXPANDS TO LUNAR SURFACE
Space infrastructure developer Vast has officially launched a new Lunar Programs division, signaling a strategic pivot from low Earth orbit (LEO) toward the lunar surface. According to Payload, the company intends to leverage its existing work on the Haven commercial space station and satellite platforms to provide foundational infrastructure for NASA’s upcoming moon outposts.
CEO Max Haot confirmed the company will utilize vertical integration across engineering and testing to accelerate deployment. The roadmap is structured into three distinct phases:
- Phase 1: Focuses on surface access, risk reduction, and foundational technology demonstrations.
- Phase 2: Establishes initial crewed systems and permanent habitation elements.
- Phase 3: Deploys high-durability infrastructure for long-duration human presence.
SCALABLE ARCHITECTURE
Vast intends to adapt its Haven module technology for the lunar environment. Primary hardware includes a standalone airlock designed for dust mitigation and pressure reliability, as well as a multi-module habitat featuring integrated life support, thermal controls, and avionics.
Beyond habitation, Vast is proposing a dedicated lunar communications and positioning constellation. This network aims to provide continuous coverage for the lunar south pole, reducing dependence on NASA’s congested Deep Space Network. By establishing its own relay systems, Vast aims to improve Space Situational Awareness (SSA) for both orbital and surface operations. This phased approach mirrors NASA’s iterative goals, moving toward a sustainable, permanent human footprint on the Moon.
