US Space Force Plans $1B Decententralized Command Grid
The U.S. Space Force is pivoting away from vulnerable centralized hubs, planning ten ‘resilient operations centers’ across the United States to secure command-and-control against physical and cyber threats.

Distributed Defense
The U.S. Space Force is shifting its strategic focus from orbital assets to the terrestrial infrastructure that controls them. According to SpaceNews, the service’s proposed $71 billion budget for fiscal 2027 includes a $1 billion allocation to begin constructing a nationwide network of "resilient operations centers."
Brig. Gen. Christopher Fernengel, director of plans and programs, stated that while orbital "widgets" like missile-warning satellites receive significant attention, the survival of the joint force depends on hardened ground architecture. The initiative aims to move away from centralized command sites, which are increasingly viewed as critical points of failure vulnerable to missile strikes, electronic warfare, and cyberattacks.
Strategic Dispersion
The Space Force intends to build up to 10 facilities modeled after the 200,000-square-foot Consolidated Space Operations Facility currently under development at Schriever Space Force Base, Colorado. The 2027 budget specifically funds four centers located at:
Redstone Arsenal, AL
Kirtland AFB, NM
Grand Forks AFB, ND
Schriever SFB, CO
These sites will manage the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture, space-based sensing, and tactical electronic warfare. By distributing command functions, the service ensures continuity of operations even if specific nodes are neutralized—a lesson reinforced by the recent targeting of space capabilities during Operation Epic Fury.
Workforce Integration
Beyond survivability, the expansion supports a growing personnel roster. The Space Force plans to add 2,800 military and 2,000 civilian roles by 2027. This decentralized movement allows for permanent space operations presence at bases that previously lacked infrastructure, offering career longevity for Guardians without mandatory relocation. This domestic grid will be supplemented by tactical centers, both stateside and overseas, dedicated to the battle management of electromagnetic missions.
