The U.S. Space Force’s Combat Forces Command has officially accepted Meadowlands into operational service. Built by L3Harris Technologies, this mobile electronic warfare system is designed to provide combatant commanders with the ability to jam adversary satellite communications via ground-based radio frequency interference. According to SpaceNews, the platform is now cleared for real-world missions.
Non-Kinetic Suppression
Meadowlands represents a shift toward reversible counter-space operations. Unlike physical anti-satellite weapons that create orbital debris, the system uses targeted signals to saturate enemy transponders. This allows for the temporary neutralization of a satellite's utility without damaging the hardware itself. The hardware is mounted on wheeled trailers, facilitating rapid deployment and repositioning specialized to evade counter-detection.
Technical and Strategic Evolution
The Meadowlands unit is the latest iteration of the Counter Communications System (CCS). Enhancements over legacy versions include:
- Broadband Capability: Interference across a wider frequency range.
- Automation: Reduced personnel requirements for field operation.
- Export Potential: Recent approval for sales to "Five Eyes" intelligence partners.
While the Space Force has not confirmed if Meadowlands was specific to recent operations in the Middle East, it highlighted "Operation Midnight Hammer" as a template for this capability. Budget and Deployment
The system is managed by Mission Delta 3, the specialist unit for electromagnetic warfare. Financial filings indicate the Space Force requested $40 million for the 2027 fiscal year to continue the Counter Satellite Communications System fielding. L3Harris has already begun deliveries to designated military sites after successful contractor testing.
