Strategic Realignment

The United Kingdom is set to deploy a new "whole-of-government" space strategy within weeks. According to SpaceNews, Rebecca Evernden, Director of the U.K. Space Agency, outlined the framework during the Spacetide conference in Tokyo. The directive integrates civil, commercial, and national security objectives under a single policy envelope.

Primary Objectives

The strategy centers on two mission-critical outcomes: economic expansion and hardened national security. To achieve this, the British government will focus on four technical pillars:
Satellite Communications: Advanced connectivity infrastructure.
Launch Capability: Establishing domestic and sovereign access to orbit.
Space Domain Awareness (SDA): Enhancing orbital tracking and sustainability.
In-Space Operations: On-orbit servicing and manufacturing segments.

Financial and Defense Commitment

This strategic pivot follows the Ministry of Defence’s recent allocation of £2.3 billion for satellite communications and £880 million for space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR). A further £9 billion is projected for space defense systems between 2030 and 2035. While the Skynet 6 narrowband system has been scrapped, the UK remains committed to deep-space radar partnerships with the US and Australia.

Global Connectivity

Evernden emphasized that the UK will not operate in isolation. The strategy reinforces the nation’s role within the European Space Agency (ESA) while deepening ties with the US and Japan. The recent structural integration of the U.K. Space Agency into the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) aims to provide a unified voice in these international markets. By consolidating policy and operations, the UK intends to lower barriers for domestic firms seeking global expansion, citing the success of debris-removal specialist Astroscale as a blueprint for foreign investment.
