The European Space Agency (ESA) has formally recognized the inauguration of the UK National Space and Defence Gateway. Positioned at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus—already home to ESA’s ECSAT facility—this new logistical and strategic hub is designed to bridge the gap between commercial space innovation and national security requirements.

According to ESA, the gateway serves as a focal point for the United Kingdom’s dual-use space capabilities. By situating the facility at Harwell, the UK aligns its defense initiatives with the existing ecosystem of 200+ space organizations and research institutions. The move follows a high-profile site visit by His Majesty King Charles III, underscoring the high-level priority placed on securing space-based infrastructure.

The gateway is expected to streamline coordination between the UK Space Agency, the Ministry of Defence, and international partners.
