SYSTEM STATUS: OPERATIONAL

ArianeGroup and SSC Space have successfully executed a second wet dress rehearsal (WDR) for the European Space Agency’s Themis reusable rocket demonstrator. The milestone was achieved on September 29 at the Esrange Space Center in Sweden, with official confirmation released by ESA on October 7.

According to European Spaceflight, this latest verification cycle utilized liquid nitrogen chilled to approximately -200°C. By substituting propellant with cryogenic nitrogen, engineers subjected the vehicle and its ground infrastructure to extreme operational pressures and temperatures without the volatile risks associated with active fuel loading.

AUTOMATION PROTOCOLS

A primary objective of this second rehearsal was the validation of automated ground systems essential for rapid reusability. Post-landing recovery involves robotic units tasked with locating the vehicle, securing connections, and draining residual oxidizer and fuel. These systems allow ground teams to maintain safe standoff distances during the critical post-flight phase.

NEXT PHASE

This test follows a successful initial WDR completed in July. With the cryogenic structural integrity and ground automation confirmed, the program trajectory shifts toward high-energy milestones. The industry now anticipates the integration and hot-fire testing of the Prometheus engine, the methalox powerhouse designed to drive Europe's next generation of low-cost, recoverable launch vehicles.

Data acquired at Esrange remains critical for the iterative development of the Themis platform as it transitions from static structural testing to dynamic flight envelopes.
