SUTHERLAND ASSET TRANSFER: SCOTLAND RECLAIMS SPACEPORT INFRASTRUCTURE
Following the collapse of launch provider Orbex, the Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has secured the assets of Sutherland Spaceport Ltd to protect the site's economic potential.

In a strategic maneuver to preserve northern sovereign launch capabilities, the Scottish development agency Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has finalized the acquisition of assets belonging to Sutherland Spaceport Ltd. This subsidiary was previously under the control of the now-collapsed launch firm Orbex.
According to European Spaceflight, the transaction was confirmed on August 25, following a coordination between HIE and the company’s joint liquidators. The acquisition marks a critical transition point for the vertical launch facility situated on the A' Mhoine peninsula, which currently exists in a state of partial development.
OPERATIONAL STATUS: REVIEW PENDING
David Oxley, HIE’s director of strategic projects, stated that the agency will now pivot toward a review phase. The primary objective is to determine how the existing hardware and ground infrastructure can be integrated into the broader regional space sector. HIE intends to consult with industry stakeholders and the local community to assess how the facility can maximize long-term economic returns.
SECTOR OUTLOOK
While the insolvency of Orbex served as a significant setback for the UK’s vertical launch ambitions, the HIE acquisition prevents the immediate liquidation of physical spaceport assets. By bringing the site under public-agency control, the Scottish government maintains a foothold in the high-latitude orbital market.
The future utility of the Sutherland site remains contingent on identifying new launch partners capable of utilizing the specific geographic and environmental parameters of the north coast facility. Further technical assessments of the site’s current state of completion are expected to follow.
