Starfish Space has confirmed the first operational deployment of its Otter spacecraft, marking a shift from experimental prototypes to commercial orbital services. According to Payload, the vehicle is manifested for launch next month aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-18 rideshare mission. This deployment follows a $100M+ Series B funding round closed earlier this year.
Primary Objective: SSPICY
The inaugural mission, designated SSPICY (Small Spacecraft Propulsion and Inspection Capability), is conducted under a $15M NASA Phase III SBIR contract. The Otter unit will perform proximity operations with several defunct U.S. satellites. The mission profile requires the Otter to maneuver within hundreds of meters of target assets to assess surface conditions, spin axes, and rotation rates—data critical for future debris mitigation efforts.
Technical Lineage
Starfish arrives at this milestone following a rigorous testing phase:
- Otter Pup (2023): Validated basic docking, guidance, and navigation protocols.
- Remora (2024): A partnership with Impulse Space that integrated Starfish software and optics onto a Mira spacecraft for autonomous rendezvous.

Backlog and Defense Contracts
The company’s roadmap extends beyond NASA. The Space Systems Command (SSC) has purchased an Otter for $37.5M to support national security docking missions. Additionally, the Space Development Agency (SDA) awarded Starfish $52.5M for deorbiting services within the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture, scheduled for 2027.
