European firms Simera Sense and IDOM have partnered to develop the MultiScape350, a next-generation Very High-Resolution imager designed to meet soaring global demand for Earth Observation data.

Strategic Realignment in EO Payloads
European space technology providers Simera Sense (Belgium) and IDOM (Spain) have formalised a strategic partnership to manufacture the optical architecture for the MultiScape350, a Very High-Resolution (VHR) Earth Observation imager. The collaboration aims to address the critical shortage of high-fidelity imaging hardware as the global market shifts toward advanced sovereign intelligence and reconnaissance capabilities.
Technical Division of Labor
According to SpaceNews, the partnership leverages specific industrial competencies to streamline the production cycle. IDOM, headquartered in Bilbao, will take the lead on the Optical Front End (OFE), utilizing its legacy in opto-mechanical engineering and precision manufacturing.
Simera Sense, based in Leuven, will maintain authority over the broader payload integration. Their responsibilities include:
Sensor subsystem development and electronics
Thermal management systems
Calibration protocols and satellite interface architecture
Final productization and mission optimization
Market Context
The MultiScape350 program arrives amid a projected surge in orbital activity. Industry analysis from Novaspace suggests approximately 6,500 Earth observation satellites will be deployed by 2035. The MultiScape350 is engineered to provide high-resolution data while adhering to the stringent Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) constraints of modern small-satellite platforms.
Johann du Toit, CEO of Simera Sense, highlighted the synergy between Simera’s flight heritage and IDOM’s optical expertise as a catalyst for accelerating market entry. Gaizka Murga, IDOM’s Head of Astronomy and Space, characterized the move as a reinforcement of the European space supply chain, ensuring regional autonomy in high-spec optical instrumentation.
