Terminal Entry: Autonomy Evolution

In Orbit Aerospace has terminated its development of re-entry hardware, pivoting instead to a software-first approach focused on spacecraft autonomy. According to Payload, the Torrance-based startup determined the re-entry vehicle market was oversaturated, leading the team to address a more critical bottleneck: the limitations of ground-based mission control.

The INTELLACT Protocol

The company’s primary solution, INTELLACT, is an AI-driven onboard system designed to manage vehicle health and execute complex maneuvers without human intervention. This capability is vital during high-stakes re-entry phases, where plasma shielding frequently creates communications blackouts, rendering ground control useless if anomalies occur.

Ishaan Patel, In Orbit CTO, suggests that as satellite constellations scale, the ratio of human operators to spacecraft must shift from "in the loop" to "on the loop." The goal is to transform operators into mission architects rather than telemetry monitors. INTELLACT is scheduled for orbital validation in Q1 2027 during the AFRL/NASA HyperSTEP mission, where it will run in a non-critical shadow mode.

Strategic Funding

The pivot is already yielding results. The company recently secured a NASA Phase I SBIR for swarm operations and a SpaceWERX Phase I STTR for LEO constellations. These follow a $1.8M Phase II award dedicated to hypersonic vehicle management. Beyond software, the firm is developing StratoDrop, an autonomous paraglider for high-altitude cargo delivery. In Orbit, which previously raised $2M, anticipates a new funding round within the next six months as it enters the competitive autonomous lane alongside players like Shield AI and Orca Aerospace.
