Satellogic Pivots to Geospatial Data-as-a-Service with SpaceKnow
Satellite operator Satellogic is transitioning from one-off imagery sales to a structured data-as-a-service model, partnering with AI firm SpaceKnow to turn Earth Observation raw data into actionable intelligence.

Operational Pivot: Bits over Hardware
Satellogic is restructuring its commercial interface. In a shift from transactional imagery sales to a Data-as-a-Service (DaaS) framework, the Earth Observation (EO) provider has entered a strategic partnership with AI geospatial specialist SpaceKnow. According to Payload, this collaboration establishes a third-party application ecosystem, effectively creating an "app store" for satellite intelligence.
The Merlin Architecture
The pivot arrives ahead of the deployment of Merlin, Satellogic’s next-generation constellation. This orbital asset is designed to map the terrestrial surface at one-meter resolution. The inaugural Merlin unit is scheduled for launch in October, with full operational capacity targeted for 2027.
Satellogic CEO Emiliano Kargieman indicates the company will focus on its core competencies: building, launching, and managing orbital hardware. By tagging raw imagery with classification metrics upon collection, Satellogic enables SpaceKnow and other partners, such as SynMax, to ingest data directly into AI models without manual processing by the operator.
Scaling Intelligence
Under a revenue-sharing architecture, Satellogic intends to scale monitoring from restricted localized points to global, automated mass-classification. The move allows the operator to maintain lean margins while partners handle the complex, vertical-specific analytics required by end-users. This strategy offloads the "heavy lifting" of software development to specialized firms, ensuring the telemetry captured by Merlin reaches mass adoption through competitive unit economics.
