Rocket Lab is set to establish its fourth global launch facility in Alaska following a landmark contract from the U.S. Space Force. According to SpaceNews, the $266 million agreement represents the company’s largest launch award to date.

Strategic Expansion

The contract, issued by the Space Systems Command’s Rocket Systems Launch Program (RSLP), covers 12 firm suborbital missions with options for an additional six. To support these operations, Rocket Lab will develop a new site at the Pacific Spaceport Complex in Kodiak, Alaska. This northern outpost joins the company’s existing infrastructure in Mahia, New Zealand, and Wallops Island, Virginia.

Hypersonic Proving Grounds

The Pentagon is increasingly utilizing Rocket Lab’s suborbital capabilities to bridge a critical gap in weapons testing. While the specific vehicle was not identified in the announcement, Rocket Lab has frequently deployed its HASTE (Hypersonic Accelerator Suborbital Test Electron) vehicle for Department of Defense customers. The demand for these services is driven by a domestic shortage of flight test infrastructure, which has historically bottlenecked the development of hypersonic and missile defense systems.

Operational Timeline

First launch operations at the Alaska site are projected to commence no earlier than late 2026. Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck stated that the deal reflects a military requirement for high-cadence, responsive launch opportunities to validate missile defense hardware. This move further pivots Rocket Lab toward a dominant role in the national security sector, moving beyond its roots in commercial small-satellite deployment.
