Redwire Secures Dedicated SpaceX Starfall Mission for Orbital Pharmaceutics
Redwire subsidiary SpaceMD has booked a full SpaceX Starfall flight for 2028, signaling a massive scale-up in microgravity manufacturing and a shift away from ISS-dependent research.

Mission Parameters: Operation Starfall
Space Microgravity Development (SpaceMD), a dedicated biotech subsidiary of Redwire, has officially secured a full-mission manifest on SpaceX’s Starfall reentry vehicle. According to SpaceNews, the mission is scheduled for a late 2028 launch and represents the largest commercial microgravity research deployment to date.
Hardware Integration
The spacecraft is slated to carry 32 units of Redwire’s Pharmaceutical In-Space Laboratory (PIL-BOX). These systems, which have seen 54 successful deployments to the International Space Station (ISS) since 2023, will be re-engineered specifically for the Starfall airframe. Redwire CEO Peter Cannito characterized the agreement as a "game changer," noting that Starfall’s tailorable microgravity environment allows for pharmaceutical crystallization at a scale previously unattainable on shared platforms.
Strategic Shift
The move highlights a pivot toward autonomous reentry platforms. While companies like Varda Space Industries have already begun validating the market with six successful missions, the entry of SpaceX’s Starfall—a vehicle first flight-tested in June—presents both a catalyst and a competitive threat to the emerging orbital manufacturing sector.
SpaceMD leadership emphasized that the mission aims to accelerate the production of life-changing therapies by decoupling from the constraints of the ISS. By leveraging SpaceX’s high-cadence transportation, Redwire intends to establish a continuous pipeline for space-based drug development, moving microgravity manufacturing from experimental batches to industrial-scale output.
