Architectural Paradigm Shift

German startup RATLOG has emerged from stealth with a disruptive hardware thesis: rocket engine complexity is a liability. According to Payload, the Dresden-founded firm, recently inducted into Y Combinator’s Fall 2026 batch, aims to eliminate approximately 90% of traditional rocket engine components.

The core of RATLOG’s innovation lies in its pressure-fed system. Unlike traditional designs that rely on volatile, complex turbopumps, RATLOG intends to generate pressure by physically rotating the entire engine assembly. CEO Charlie Weise identifies turbopumps as the primary failure point in modern rocketry and a bottleneck for scaling. By removing them, the company sacrifices bearing simplicity for a massive reduction in part count and manufacturing overhead.

Strategic Trajectory

RATLOG is positioning itself as a high-speed European alternative to established heavy-lift providers. While domestic competitors like Isar Aerospace took seven years to reach initial flight tests, RATLOG is operating on an accelerated timeline:

  • November 2026: Hot-fire test of flight combustion chamber.
  • 2027: Completion of a flight-ready engine.
  • 2028: First-stage hopper testing.
  • 2029–2030: Initial orbital launch attempt.

Market Positioning

The startup is targeting Falcon 9 specifications but with a wider fairing to accommodate larger payloads. Despite their early stage, Weise reports letters of intent from orbital data center and constellation operators. The company is currently evaluating launch sites in Oman and the UAE, positioning itself as a more agile, cost-effective successor to the Ariane 6 heavy-lift legacy. Following a €30k government grant and successful September prototyping, the team is now preparing for the YC Demo Day in December to secure the capital required for full-scale development.
