Mission Status: Stable

Portal Space Systems has confirmed that its Starburst-1 spacecraft is operational following a Tuesday deployment via SpaceX’s Bandwagon-5 rideshare mission. According to Payload, the satellite successfully separated, established ground communications, and deployed its solar arrays. CEO Jeff Thornburg characterizes the current status as “80% success,” pending the activation of the craft’s ammonia-propulsion system for orbital maneuvers scheduled in the coming days.

Operational Payloads

Starburst-1 is currently hosting three critical technology demonstrators:
Zenno Astronautics: An attitude-control system utilizing Earth’s magnetic field for orientation.
TRL11: An edge-processing camera system providing live orbital video.
* Atomic-6: “Space Armor” tiles designed to mitigate orbital debris impacts. The mission team is monitoring telemetry and video feeds for potential impact verification.

Industrial Expansion

While the prototype was developed in a 6,000-square-foot facility, Portal is transitioning production to a new 65,000-square-foot manufacturing hub in Bothell, Washington. The site—formerly a mega-church—is being retrofitted to produce 28 spacecraft annually, comprising 16 Starburst and 12 Supernova units. The facility includes dedicated flat-sat testing areas and a Star Trek-themed mission control.

Commercial interest has spiked following the successful deployment, with Thornburg reporting a surge in demand and three commercial contracts nearing finalization. The success of this inaugural flight validates the rapid development cycle favored by the firm.
