Poland Pledges $745 Million to IRIS² Multi-Orbit Constellation
Poland has committed approximately $745 million to the European Union’s IRIS² satellite project, funding 12 specific satellites to bolster strategic communications and national security.

Warsaw has formalized a significant financial commitment to Europe’s sovereign orbital communication layer. Per SpaceNews, the Polish government will invest approximately $745 million (2.8 billion PLN) into the IRIS² multi-orbit constellation. The capital is earmarked for the construction of 12 dedicated satellites: six for Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) and six for Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
Sovereign Resilience
At a ceremony attended by EU Commissioner Andrius Kubilius and Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński, officials emphasized that the investment serves both tactical and commercial interests. By securing dedicated satellite bandwidth, Poland aims to maintain strategic communication channels during potential regional conflicts or crises. The IRIS² initiative is frequently described as the European Union’s response to private mega-constellations like Starlink, designed to eliminate connectivity dead zones while integrating with terrestrial 5G and 6G networks.
Industrial Expansion
This financial injection is expected to catalyze growth for over 400 domestic space-sector companies. The full IRIS² architecture is projected to comprise 292 satellites across various orbital shells (LEO-High, LEO-Low, and MEO).
This commitment follows Poland's recent selection as the host for the first European Space Agency (ESA) center in an eastern flank member state. Furthermore, Poland plans to increase its ESA budget contribution to 731 million euros between 2026 and 2028 and launch a 500 million zloty state-run fund to support emerging space enterprises.
