The European Space Agency (ESA) has confirmed the successful arrival and unboxing of the Meteosat Third Generation Imager-2 (MTG-I2) at the European Spaceport in French Guiana. Following its delivery via ship from Cannes, the spacecraft has been extracted from its protective transport container and transitioned into the cleanroom environment for inspections.
Technical Objectives
MTG-I2 represents a vital component in the modernization of Europe’s orbital weather infrastructure. According to ESA, this satellite is the second imaging platform in the MTG series, designed to replace the aging Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) fleet. Its primary instrument suite is engineered to provide high-resolution imagery of weather patterns over Europe and Africa, providing critical data every 10 minutes across 16 spectral bands.
Key enhancements over previous generations include:
- Flexible Combined Imager (FCI): Faster scanning and higher spatial resolution.
- Lightning Imager (LI): Continuous monitoring of lightning strikes to improve storm tracking and aviation safety.
Launch Trajectory
The arrival in Kourou initiates a rigorous campaign of pre-launch trials. Engineers will subject the hardware to comprehensive health checks and fueling protocols before integration with the launch vehicle. Once operational in geostationary orbit, MTG-I2 will work in tandem with MTG-I1 to ensure data redundancy and significantly more accurate "nowcasting" for severe atmospheric events.
This deployment ensures that EUMETSAT—Europe’s meteorological satellite agency—retains its baseline capabilities for the next two decades, reinforcing the continent's autonomy in climate observation and disaster response.
