Strategic Realignment in the North

NordSpace Ventures, the investment arm of the Canadian launch startup NordSpace, has announced a strategic stake in North Vector Dynamics (NVD). According to Payload, the deal aims to bolster sovereign Canadian missile and defense capabilities at a time of escalating geopolitical and economic friction.

The Ottawa Buffer

The investment coincides with the launch of the Strategic Exports Office (SEO) by the Canadian government. Designed to improve international competitiveness, the SEO will coordinate government-wide support and deploy high-level advocacy to secure global aerospace and defense contracts. Complementing this is the new Strategic Exports Advisory Council (SEAC), featuring industry leaders Daniel Goldberg (Telesat) and Mike Greenley (MDA Space).

Navigating the CUSMA Rift

This push for export autonomy comes as trade relations with Washington deteriorate. With the US failing to confirm the CUSMA renewal and threats of 50% tariffs on Canadian goods, Ottawa has committed to doubling non-US exports by 2035. Private capital is now flowing to bridge the gap between building hardware and selling it to international allies.

Technical Synergy

The NordSpace-NVD partnership is more than financial. The collaboration centers on hardware integration and R&D:
Propulsion: NVD will utilize NordSpace’s Canadian-built Hadfield-150 engine for precision defense systems.
Hypersonics: Both entities will participate in a Department of National Defence-funded network led by the University of Calgary.

NordSpace CEO Rahul Goel noted that the investment is intended to signal to institutional investors that domestic collaboration is vital for sovereign defense maturity.
