OSMOS X to Lead European Orbital Defense Consortium
French startup OSMOS X has been selected by the European Defence Fund to lead a €4.5M initiative focused on tactical satellite capture and orbital threat mitigation.

Tactical Security Directive
The European Defence Fund (EDF) has formally engaged French OTV startup OSMOS X to spearhead a strategic coalition focused on orbital threat response. According to Payload, the 30-month study is backed by approximately €4.5 million and aims to address a critical capability gap in European space defense.
The Coalition Matrix
The consortium unites expertise from seven European entities, including France’s ArcSpace and CNRS, Germany’s KINETIK Space, Italy’s Politecnico di Milano, and Poland’s Poznań University of Technology. The primary deliverable for this phase is a preliminary design review for a specialized intervention spacecraft.
Mission Parameters: Capture and Neutralize
The project stems from recent escalations in orbit. Defense ministries recently monitored a Russian satellite maneuvering within 50 meters of an ICEYE intel asset over Ukraine, exposing a lack of reactive hardware. The proposed OSMOS X vehicle is designed to:
Approach and Capture: Execute close-proximity operations with non-cooperative targets.
Manipulation: Utilize in-space welding to attach jammers or external propulsion units.
* Orbit Modification: Force adversarial assets into non-threatening trajectories without generating hazardous debris.
Strategic Outlook
OSMOS X plans to validate its high-power propulsion system—boasting a target delta-V of 12,000 m/s—during a demonstration flight late next year. While the system is designed for high-stakes tactical use, the firm argues that a small fleet of just four satellites could provide comprehensive Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) coverage, enabling a response time of less than 48 hours to any position in the belt. The objective is clear: transition from passive observation to active enforcement of European orbital interests.
