Orbital Operations Secures $35M for Cryogenic On-Orbit Maneuver Demo
California startup Orbital Operations has landed a $35M DoD contract to demonstrate Astraeus, a reusable cryogenic vehicle designed to provide high-speed, dynamic tactical response in contested orbits.

Operational Status: Contested
The Department of Defense has accelerated its pursuit of orbital maneuverability, awarding Long Beach-based startup Orbital Operations up to $35M via a prototype Other Transaction Agreement. According to Payload, the funding will support a full-scale in-orbit demonstration of Astraeus, a cryogenic maneuvering vehicle designed to function as a reusable high-thrust third stage.
Technical Specifications: Astraeus
Astraeus is engineered to bridge the gap between traditional launch vehicles and long-term orbital assets. Unlike disposable stages that succumb to propellant boil-off within days, Astraeus utilizes an active onboard refrigeration system to maintain liquid hydrogen and oxygen for years.
Key mission capabilities include:
Rapid Response: Execution of maneuvers within single-digit hours of command, exceeding the current 48-hour military benchmark.
Multi-Role Logistics: Modular design allowing for refueling, tactical positioning, and logistics—modeled after the C-130 Hercules aircraft.
* Recyclable Delta-V: The vehicle is designed to ferry payloads to high orbits before returning to LEO for refueling.
Strategic Context
CEO Ben Schleuniger emphasizes that the current "space age" requires dynamic assets to navigate increasingly congested and contested environments. The demand is highlighted by recent proximity operations, such as Russia’s Cosmos 2612 shadowing the ICEYE-X36 radar satellite.
Orbital Operations also confirmed a $7M seed extension led by DTX Ventures, bringing their total capital to approximately $16M. The 13-person team, which achieved a full-pressure engine hot-fire within six months of their initial seed round, is now focused on qualification and refrigeration-cycle testing ahead of the maiden flight.
