The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has signaled a continued shift toward orbital logistics, awarding Blue Origin an $11.7 million contract modification. According to Payload, this adjustment brings the total contract value to approximately $13 million. The objective: leveraging Blue Origin’s launch architecture for global point-to-point cargo delivery to serve Department of Defense (DoD) requirements.
The REGAL Framework
This funding falls under the Rocket Experimentation for Global Agile Logistics (REGAL) program. Established in 2021, REGAL is one of four "Vanguard" initiatives identified by the AFRL as critical for next-generation theater operations. The mission profile targets the delivery of critical supplies to any global location in under 60 minutes. Current logistics rely on C-17 aircraft, which face hours of flight time and exposure to contested airspace. Orbital trajectories bypass these atmospheric constraints entirely.
Competitive Trajectory
Blue Origin is now part of a crowded field of contractors developing rapid-response reentry capabilities:
- SpaceX: Holds a $102 million contract for Starship-based logistics, targeting up to 100 tons per mission.
- Sierra Space: Recent recipient of REGAL funding for its Ghost platform, targeting 5–10 tons of cargo from orbit.
- Rocket Lab: Contracted for a 2026 demonstration mission using the Neutron launch vehicle.
- Anduril and Outpost Space: Both secured contracts in 2025 for specialized reentry containers and heat shield technologies.
The DoD is also exploring the concept of "orbital warehouses"—storing hardware in space for immediate deorbiting and deployment during kinetic conflicts. While many current contracts are experimental, the influx of capital suggests the era of the space-based supply chain is approaching operational status.
