The European Space Agency (ESA) has solidified launch plans for two critical Earth observation assets. According to ESA YouTube, the Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) and Sentinel-3C missions are scheduled for orbital insertion via the Vega-C launch vehicle. This dual-manifest mission represents a strategic optimization of Europe’s small-lift launch capability.
Scientific Objectives: FLEX
FLEX is designed to address a specific data gap in terrestrial biology. It will serve as the first mission dedicated to mapping global vegetation fluorescence. By detecting the faint reddish glow emitted by plants during photosynthesis, FLEX provides a direct indicator of photosynthetic activity. This data is critical for monitoring plant health and stress levels that are otherwise invisible to standard imaging sensors.
Continuity: Sentinel-3C
Operating in tandem with FLEX, Sentinel-3C serves as the third flight model in the Sentinel-3 series under the Copernicus program. Its primary role is to ensure long-term data continuity for ocean and land monitoring. Equipped with high-end radiometers and altimeters, the satellite measures sea-surface topography, temperature, and ocean color. The proximity of Sentinel-3C to FLEX in orbit is intentional; the data from Sentinel’s sensors will provide the necessary atmospheric corrections and contextual imagery to calibrate FLEX’s fluorescence measurements.
Launch Infrastructure
The mission relies on the Vega-C, the upgraded variant of the original Vega launcher. Developed by Avio and operated by Arianespace, the Vega-C offers increased performance and volume, making the simultaneous deployment of these two distinct payloads feasible. The successful integration of these missions underscores the ESA’s commitment to maintaining a sovereign and versatile launch manifest while advancing the high-resolution monitoring of the Earth’s biosphere.
