Mission Status: Nominal

Italian space-tech startup NaviGate has successfully completed the in-orbit demonstration (IoD) of NaviCode Caravel, an autonomous precise orbit determination software. The trial was conducted aboard an ION Satellite Carrier operated by D-Orbit, marking a critical shift from ground-dependent flight dynamics to edge-based orbital awareness.

Technical Execution

According to SpaceNews, the software ran directly on the ION’s existing onboard computer. It processed raw GNSS receiver data in real time, requiring no specialized hardware additions. The demonstration was executed in two phases: ground validation on an engineering model followed by a live orbital upload via D-Orbit’s Software-in-Orbit service.

Telemetry confirmed that NaviCode Caravel achieved a formal positioning uncertainty as low as 5.2 cm, with mean values remaining in the decimeter range. These results were verified against reference orbits generated by GODOT, the European Space Agency’s standard flight dynamics software, proving the software's high-fidelity capabilities.

Tactical Implications

Currently, satellite operators rely on ground stations and specialized teams to reconstruct orbital paths—a process that creates bottlenecks as mega-constellations expand. NaviGate’s CTO, Andrea Sesta, noted that Caravel allows spacecraft to predict their own future positions, facilitating autonomous maneuvering and optimized ground station contacts.

NaviGate, a Sapienza University of Rome spin-off backed by Galaxia, plans to extend the NaviCode suite to include multi-sensor resilient navigation and autonomous maneuver planning. This successful IoD positions the company to begin pilot deployments for Earth observation and PNT (Positioning, Navigation, and Timing) constellations immediately.
