Terminal Access 28nm: Domestic Microelectronics

Spirit Electronics has officially deployed a new managed-access service aimed at the aerospace and defense sectors. According to SpaceNews, the initiative establishes a secure, onshore pathway for 28nm CMOS semiconductor manufacturing within the United States. This move targets the increasing demand for domestic wafer fabrication for custom ASICs and high-reliability integrated circuits.

Strategic Supply Chain Sovereignty

The offering allows Tier 1 government programs to bypass traditional offshore dependencies by utilizing mature, mixed-signal CMOS platforms entirely within U.S. borders. These platforms, already proven in high-reliability industrial sectors, are now being funneled into defense lifecycles. Spirit Electronics acts as the central interface, managing technical alignment, early-stage program scoping, and security frameworks under strict NDA protocols.

Marti McCurdy, CEO of Spirit Electronics, emphasized that the objective is to simplify the transition to onshore manufacturing for mission-critical hardware. The firm provides a single, trusted channel to bridge program requirements with domestic foundry capacity.

Integrated Sustainment

Spirit’s model is built on a vertically integrated infrastructure. This includes:
- Secure Program Oversight: Managed through CMMC Level 2 trusted facilities.
- Post-Foundry Services: Including onshore assembly, testing, and environmental screening.
- Compliance: All operations meet AS9100, ISO9001, and DLA certifications.

By centralizing lifecycle support—from design to qualification—the managed-access model aims to reduce risk profiles and accelerate deployment speed for modern aerospace systems within the domestic microelectronics ecosystem.
