NASA is currently vetting candidates for its second Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA), a 365-day terrestrial isolation study designed to simulate surface operations on Mars. According to NASA Breaking News, the agency is seeking four crew members to inhabit a specialized 1,200-square-foot environment at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.
Habitat Logistics
The facility, designated Mars Dune Alpha, is a 3D-printed structure engineered to replicate the environmental stressors of the Red Planet. Crew members will face significant resource limitations, simulated equipment failures, communication latencies, and rigorous workloads to provide high-fidelity data on human behavioral health and performance.
Mission Objectives
Selected volunteers will engage in a variety of mission-critical tasks, including:
Simulated extravehicular activities (EVAs)
Robotic operations and habitat maintenance
Exercise and personal hygiene protocols
Crop growth and food resource management
Candidate Specifications
Eligibility requirements remain stringent, mirroring standard astronaut selection criteria. Applicants must be healthy, non-smoking U.S. citizens aged 30-55. Proficiency in English is mandatory for operational safety. Academic prerequisites include a master’s degree in a STEM field from an accredited institution, coupled with at least two years of professional STEM experience or 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command time on jet aircraft.
Data harvested from this year-long simulation will inform the logistics for future Artemis missions and the eventual crewed push to the Martian surface. Applications are currently being processed via the agency's official portal.
