ORBITAL INSERTION CONFIRMED

The European Space Agency (ESA) has confirmed that MTG-I2, the second satellite in the Meteosat Third Generation Imager series, has successfully reached its intended geostationary orbit. This milestone marks the formal conclusion of the Launch and Early Orbit Phase (LEOP), one of the most hazardous segments of any space mission.

OPERATIONS REPORT

According to ESA, the orbital maneuver sequence was managed by a dedicated project support team consisting of 40 experts. Operations were centered at the Telespazio Mission Control Centre in Fucino, Italy. Throughout the LEOP, the team maintained continuous telemetry and command links to ensure the satellite transitioned from its initial launch injection to its permanent slot in the geostationary arc.

NEXT PHASE: COMMISSIONING

With the satellite now stabilized in its final orbital position, the focus shifts to the commissioning phase. This will involve rigorous testing of the onboard instruments, including the Flexible Combined Imager and the Lightning Imager, to ensure they survived the stresses of launch and are ready for operational service.

Once fully operational, MTG-I2 will work in tandem with its predecessor, MTG-I1, significantly enhancing the resolution and frequency of meteorological data available to European forecasters. This mission is a collaborative effort between ESA and EUMETSAT, designed to provide high-fidelity weather monitoring until the 2040s.
