MIURA 5: PLD Space Validates Explosive Flight Termination System
PLD Space has successfully completed critical destructive testing of the MIURA 5 Flight Termination System (FTS), marking a significant safety milestone for Spain's orbital ambitions.

# SYSTEM VALIDATION: MIURA 5 FTS
Spanish launch provider PLD Space has achieved a critical safety milestone with the successful explosive validation of the MIURA 5 Flight Termination System (FTS). The test ensures the vehicle can be remotely neutralized should it deviate from its flight corridor during ascent.
According to European Spaceflight, the destructive test focused on the linear shaped charges designed to breach the vehicle's structural integrity. During the campaign, engineers confirmed that the FTS can successfully depressurize the rocket's propellant tanks, effectively halting propulsion and preventing a high-energy impact in the event of a catastrophic failure.
Hardware Integrity
The FTS is a mission-critical safety component mandated by international spaceports, including the Guiana Space Centre (CSG) in Kourou, French Guiana, where the MIURA 5 is slated to debut. By ensuring the rocket can be fragmented on command, PLD Space satisfies the rigorous range safety requirements necessary for orbital operations over the Atlantic.
Path to Kourou
This validation follows the suborbital success of MIURA 1 and signals a transition toward the company's full-scale orbital capability. Development is now accelerating for the first MIURA 5 flight, currently projected for 2027. The upcoming mission will serve as Spain’s inaugural attempt to place a payload into orbit using a domestically developed liquid-propellant launcher.
PLD Space continues to refine the hardware for the vehicle's first and second stages. With the FTS architecture now verified, the company moves one step closer to finalizing the flight configuration for the European micro-launcher market.
