MDA Space Pivot: Canadarm3 Shifts Focus to Lunar Surface Logistics
Following NASA's pause on the Gateway space station, MDA Space is repurposing its robotic systems for ground-based lunar operations under a $720M contract.

MISSION REASSIGNMENT
MDA Space is pivoting its robotic architecture. The Canadian aerospace firm confirmed it will "repurpose" the Canadarm3—originally engineered for microgravity operations aboard the NASA-led Lunar Gateway—to support upcoming logistics activities on the lunar surface.
According to Payload, the decision follows NASA’s March 2026 announcement to pause development of the Gateway station. Despite the hardware's transition from an orbital station to surface infrastructure, the fiscal scope of the mission remains intact. MDA Space is currently executing the project under a $1B CDN ($720M USD) contract with the Canadian government.
OPERATIONAL CONTINUITY
CEO Mike Greenley indicated that while the application of the technology is undergoing an adjustment, design and development are proceeding at "full steam ahead." This strategic shift mirrors recent moves by industry peers, including Northrop Grumman and the European Space Agency (ESA), both of which have redirected Gateway-specific projects toward lunar base applications.
EXPANDING CISLUNAR FOOTPRINT
MDA’s robotics division reported Q2 revenues of $99.5M CDN, a 13% year-over-year increase driven by lunar demand. Beyond the Canadian flagship contract, the firm is diversifying its lunar portfolio:
ESA Argonaut Mission: MDA’s UK division is providing advanced landing sensors via a contract with OHB.
Surface Mobility: The company is a member of the Lunar Outpost-led consortium currently competing for NASA’s Artemis Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV) contract.
