Payload Deficit: Maverick Fills the Gap
As the orbital transport market faces a looming supply crunch, Maverick Space Systems has moved to secure the majority of available volume on Portal Space Systems’ upcoming Motus Via Sol mission. According to Payload, Maverick has booked ten 400-kg class Kepler Communications Tranche-2 satellites to fly aboard the dedicated SpaceX Falcon 9 launch, currently scheduled for mid-2028.
Strategic Integration
This agreement solidifies a high-density architecture designed to bypass current market bottlenecks. Portal Space Systems purchased the full Falcon 9 capacity less than a month ago, appointing Maverick to manage integration and secondary manifest logistics. The deal effectively fills the mission's manifest, leaving only a single "half-cake-topper" slot available for late-entry payloads.
The Shift to Private Manifests
The move highlights a structural shift in launch procurement. With SpaceX reportedly pausing internal Transporter mission bookings for late 2028 and early 2029, launch integrators are transitioning from mere brokers to primary mission controllers. Unlike competitors Exolaunch and SEOPS, who have purchased dedicated Falcon 9 flights outright, Maverick is employing a capital-efficient model by partnering with Portal, who provides the primary financing for the vehicle.
Maverick COO Vidur Kaushish noted that missions like Motus Via Sol are essential responses to the current capacity-constrained environment. Both Maverick and Portal are reportedly evaluating further dedicated and shared missions across multiple launch vehicle platforms to meet sustained demand.
