NASA’s current methodology for Mars transit is insufficient for the complexities of a crewed mission. According to SpaceNews, the recent "Achieving Mars XII" workshop—convened by Explore Mars, Inc.—concluded that human arrival on the Red Planet cannot be treated as a standard extension of Lunar operations. A successful mission requires the simultaneous, early-stage integration of four distinct vectors: engineering, human health, science, and planetary protection.

The Operational Reality

The panel, including Mars veterans Bruce Jakosky and Scott Hubbard, highlighted that engineering constraints often fix mission design before biological or scientific realities are considered. Unlike the Moon, Mars offers no rapid return. Crew performance will degrade physically and cognitively over multi-year cycles, requiring architectures that account for diminished human capacity far from Mission Control.

Strategic Recommendations

The workshop findings emphasize that precursor orbital missions are mandatory to mitigate risk. Specifically, there is an urgent need for a new high-resolution imager to replace the aging Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) and its degrading HiRISE instrument. Without fresh hazard analysis data, safe landing site selection remains impossible.

To bridge the gap between concept and execution, the group recommends NASA formalize a multi-disciplinary community group to meet semi-annually. This body would ensure that planetary protection protocols—preventing forward and back contamination—are hardcoded into the hardware design from the outset, rather than being managed as late-stage procedural afterthoughts.
