ArianeGroup subsidiary MaiaSpace is pivoting its engineering strategy to significantly increase the orbital lift capacity of its ‘Maia’ launch vehicle. According to European Spaceflight, the company is evaluating the addition of a fourth Prometheus engine to the rocket’s booster stage.

Initial specifications for the Maia vehicle utilized a three-engine configuration on the first stage, designed to deliver 500 kg to Sun-Synchronous Orbit (SSO) in a reusable mode or 1,500 kg in an expendable capacity. The proposed integration of a fourth liquid oxygen/methane-powered Prometheus engine—a power plant developed by ArianeGroup and CNES—is expected to disrupt these baseline metrics.

OPERATIONAL SCALING

The modification aims to double the vehicle's expendable performance. Projections suggest the upgraded four-engine variant will be capable of delivering up to 3,000 kg to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) in its expendable configuration. When recovered and reused, the payload capacity is expected to reach approximately 1,500 kg.

This shift toward a larger medium-lift profile suggests a tactical realignment. By increasing the available thrust, MaiaSpace intends to serve a broader range of satellite constellations and heavy hardware delivery missions that were previously outside the scope of the original 500 kg SSO reusable target.
