ORBITAL SURVEILLANCE UPDATE

The Spanish Council of Ministers has authorized a significant capital injection to secure the nation’s next-generation orbital reconnaissance capabilities. According to European Spaceflight, the government has approved the early release of €65.8 million dedicated to the development of the PAZ 2 satellite.

STRATEGIC CONTINUITY

PAZ 2 is slated to succeed the original PAZ satellite, a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) platform launched in 2018. The current mission, managed by Hisdesat, provides high-resolution imaging for both civilian and defense applications. The primary objective of this expedited funding is to eliminate potential gaps in operational coverage as the first-generation hardware approaches the end of its projected service life.

LOGISTICAL TIMELINE

While the original budget allocation was scheduled for the 2025 fiscal cycle, this proactive shift allows immediate procurement and development phases to commence. The total program cost is estimated at €211 million. The PAZ 2 platform will utilize advanced SAR technology, enabling all-weather, day-and-night observation—a critical requirement for Spain’s sovereign security architecture.

DATA ARCHITECTURE

The resulting imagery will be integrated into the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) framework and provided to the Spanish Ministry of Defence. By securing these funds early, Madrid aims to maintain its status as a leading provider of radar intelligence within the European orbital ecosystem.
