SpaceX has finalized plans to establish a high-cadence launch facility on the Louisiana Gulf Coast. According to Payload, President and COO Gwynne Shotwell announced the initiative alongside Governor Jeff Landry, designating the site as the future hub for rapid Starship operations.
STRATEGIC SHIFT
The move coincides with a pivot in Florida operations; while Falcon 9 will continue Starlink deployments from California, all future East Coast Starlink missions are transitioning to the Starship platform. SpaceX officials cite Louisiana's unique coastal geography, ample gas resources, and optimal flight trajectories as critical factors for achieving their goal of thousands of launches per year.
INFRASTRUCTURE SPECS
The $100 billion investment, set for construction in 2025 with a 2029 operational target, includes:
- Five launch complexes, featuring ten total pads and dedicated propellant farms.
- Self-contained systems for power generation, propellant production, and deep-water shipping.
- Logistics hub including vehicle processing, residential zones, and a dedicated airport.
- Job Creation: Projected employment of 3,000 to 10,000 personnel.
ENVIRONMENTAL AND LEGAL CLEARANCE
The project follows a federal court dismissal of a lawsuit against ExxonMobil, freeing 130,000 acres for the development. To address the fragile ecosystem, SpaceX has pledged environmental offsets, including marsh restoration and wildlife conservation. Shotwell emphasized that the company will partner with state agencies to integrate the facility into Louisiana’s coastal master plan, restoring natural storm buffers through wetland reconnection.
Landry framed the deal as a departure from the state's extractive history, aiming instead for a permanent foothold in the orbital economy.
