Latvia Targets NTN Dominance via LMT and Novaspace Partnership
LMT Group and Novaspace have signed a strategic agreement to establish a 5G/6G satellite communications hub in Latvia, aiming to bridge terrestrial and orbital networks for resilient infrastructure.

Strategic Convergence at ESTEC
At the European Space Agency’s Industry Space Days in Noordwijk, the Latvian Mobile Telephone (LMT) Group and consultancy firm Novaspace formalized a cooperation agreement to architect a national telecommunications innovation platform. According to SpaceNews, the initiative is designed to integrate Latvia’s domestic connectivity sector into the global satellite economy, modeling itself after the ESA 5G/6G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) Hub.
Architectural Framework
The project, facilitated by the EU-funded FIERCE Ecosystem Building Programme, focuses on the seamless hybridization of terrestrial and orbital networks. As the industry transitions toward 6G, the objective is to eliminate the distinction between ground-based towers and satellite constellations. This integration is critical for maintaining operational continuity during infrastructure failures or severe environmental anomalies.
Regional Capability Expansion
LMT is already operating within the ESA ecosystem, collaborating with satellite operator Sateliot on dual-mode IoT connectivity. This new hub aims to scale that footprint, developing hardware and software capable of switching between networks without service interruption.
"Integrating satellite communications into our infrastructure is essential for the 6G era," stated Ingmārs Pūķis, VP at LMT. The hub will prioritize the development of exportable space technologies and secure communications for critical infrastructure. By leveraging Novaspace’s market intelligence, Latvia intends to establish a unique regional value proposition rather than replicating existing European clusters, ultimately securing its position in flagship programs like IRIS², Galileo, and Copernicus.
