ORBITAL STATUS: ACTIVE

In a strategic pivot toward space sovereignty, Ukrainian defense-tech startup Himera and Danish manufacturer GomSpace have initiated orbital testing of the Obria Nano. The satellite, which reached orbit via the SpaceX Transporter-18 mission on October 1, serves as the prototype for a future dedicated communications constellation over Ukraine.

OPERATIONAL CONTEXT

According to SpaceNews, the partnership was announced on October 27, following a period of high-stakes volatility regarding Ukraine’s current communication infrastructure. The Ukrainian military has relied heavily on SpaceX’s Starlink and Starshield services since 2022. However, recent service disruptions and connectivity limits—impacting drone operations and command networks—have underscored the tactical risk of dependence on commercial external providers.

SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS & GOALS

Himera, founded in 2022 to develop EW-resistant tactical radios, intends to use the Obria Nano to validate technology for a larger, locally controlled network. Misha Rudominski, Himera’s CEO, stated the project aims to lay the foundation for strategic security, with long-term plans to move manufacturing of satellites and ground terminals within Ukraine’s borders.

This mission is one of several European initiatives aimed at securing Kyiv’s digital front. Just days prior, Finland’s Iceye and Nokia signed a letter of intent with the Ukrainian Defense Ministry to explore a sovereign broadband network. While these constellations will not match the global scale of Starlink, they provide high-priority, secure redundancy for critical defense sectors.

DATELINE: LEO TERMINAL

Neither company has disclosed the final constellation size or technical payload capacity. Testing remains ongoing to refine the architecture for a resilient, independent uplink.
