The European Commission has solidified the industrial foundation for IRIS² (Infrastructure for Resilience, Interconnectivity and Security by Satellite). According to European Spaceflight, Aerospacelab and Thales Alenia Space have secured major contracts under the SpaceRISE consortium, totaling a combined value of approximately €5.4 billion. This commitment underscores Europe’s shift toward a sovereign, multi-orbital communication network designed to eliminate dependency on foreign commercial constellations.

Industrial Distribution

Thales Alenia Space leads the architectural development, focusing on the high-security requirements of the system. The firm is tasked with engineering the ground segments and the complex orbital synchronization necessary for government-grade encrypted communications.

Aerospacelab, a Belgian satellite manufacturer, secures a pivotal role in the production phase. The company will utilize its automated production facilities to manufacture a significant portion of the satellite bus units. This marks a transition from traditional bespoke satellite assembly to a high-cadence industrial model, essential for populating the constellation's LEO (Low Earth Orbit) component.

Operational Objectives

The IRIS² project aims to provide secure, high-speed data links for government agencies and critical infrastructure across the European Union. By integrating MEO (Medium Earth Orbit) and LEO assets, the system will offer low-latency connectivity with global coverage. The €5.4 billion allocation is a primary component of the total program budget, signaling the start of the manufacturing and deployment cycle intended to reach initial operational capability by 2030.
