Hydrosat Initiates Nyktòs: A High-Resolution MWIR Ecosystem
Hydrosat expands its Earth observation capabilities with the Nyktòs thermal mid-wave infrared program, introducing a new European production facility to meet growing defense and sovereign intelligence demands.

Surveillance Integration
Hydrosat is scaling its Earth observation (EO) architecture with the unveiling of Nyktòs, a high-resolution thermal mid-wave infrared (MWIR) program. According to Payload, the system is engineered to function as a precision complement to the company’s existing Osiris constellation. While Osiris provides wide-swath, persistent monitoring, Nyktòs delivers targeted high-res imagery, establishing a proprietary "tip and cue" capability within the Hydrosat ecosystem.
Operational Parameters
CEO Pieter Fossel confirmed that Nyktòs is designed to compete directly with high-tier thermal operators such as SatVu, which currently offers 3.5-meter resolution. The primary driver for this development is escalating demand from European government and military sectors for 24/7 intelligence. Unlike traditional optical sensors, MWIR payloads maintain operational effectiveness under the cover of darkness and through atmospheric interference, allowing for the continuous tracking of conflict zones and industrial assets.
European Infrastructure
To satisfy the strict sovereignty requirements of regional defense customers, Hydrosat will localize production. The company is currently scouting locations for a new European manufacturing facility. This site will serve as the hub for in-house assembly and supply chain management, ensuring the hardware meets domestic security standards.
Strategic Roadmap
The Nyktòs initiative is currently featured in a bid for the Greek government, though its applications are intended for global defense and industrial monitoring. Hydrosat expects the new production facility to be operational by 2025, with the first Nyktòs payloads scheduled to roll off the assembly line by 2028. This move signifies a shift toward a vertically integrated, multi-tier thermal surveillance network.
