MISSION UPDATE: ORBITAL INSERTION CONFIRMED

The European Space Agency (ESA) has confirmed the arrival of the Hera spacecraft at the Didymos binary asteroid system. According to ESA, the mission serves as a "space detective," tasked with a forensic examination of the Didymos system following the kinetic impact performed by NASA’s DART mission in 2022.

DATA ACQUISITION AND ANALYSIS

Hera’s primary objective is to survey the impact site on Dimorphos, the smaller moonlet orbiting the larger asteroid Didymos. While NASA confirmed that DART successfully altered the moonlet's orbital period, Hera will provide the high-resolution data required to turn this experiment into a repeatable planetary defense technique. Key mission parameters include:

  • Crater Mapping: Detailed imaging of the impact scar to determine the depth and diameter of the DART collision site.
  • Mass Measurements: Precise calculations of Dimorphos’s mass and internal structure to understand how much material was ejected.
  • Compositional Analysis: Assessing the surface mineralogy of both bodies.

THE CUBESAT DEPLOYMENT

To augment the main spacecraft’s sensors, Hera will deploy two CubeSats—Milani and Juventas. According to ESA, these small-scale probes will perform close-range maneuvers, utilizing low-frequency radar to probe the internal structure of Dimorphos, a first for asteroid exploration.

The findings from this mission will refine numerical models of asteroid impacts, ensuring that if a future threat to Earth is detected, the international community will possess the validated data necessary to deflect it effectively.
