Helogen to Launch Dual Bio-Manufacturing Missions via SpaceX
Space manufacturing startup Helogen plans two October missions to demonstrate its HEL-IOS platform, focusing on in-orbit production of biopolymers for orthopedic implants and retinal proteins.

In-orbit manufacturing startup Helogen has confirmed two orbital missions scheduled for October, marking the first full-scale deployment of its HEL-IOS modular platform. According to Payload, these missions will launch on separate SpaceX vehicles to validate the production of specialized biological materials in microgravity.
Strategic Objectives
The dual-mission profile serves both internal product development and commercial client requirements:
- Mission One: Utilizing an undisclosed reentry vehicle, Helogen will manufacture biopolymers designed for orthopedic applications, such as shoulder and knee surgeries. These in-space variants are expected to exhibit higher density and durability than terrestrial equivalents. The company intends to recover the material for analysis post-splashdown.
- Mission Two: In collaboration with LambdaVision, Helogen will use a D-Orbit spacecraft to demonstrate the synthesis of proteins for artificial retinas.
Scaling the Orbital Foundry
CEO Shishir Bankapur emphasizes that these flights are critical for establishing the sterility, traceability, and accountability required for medical-grade regulatory approval. While many competitors focus on pharmaceutical precursors, Helogen is prioritizing surgical implants—a sector Bankapur identifies as a more immediate commercial pathway.
Helogen’s roadmap includes eight missions over the next year. While approximately 75% of these will focus on proprietary biopolymers, the company remains open to external R&D. The HEL-IOS platform, previously a NASA TechLeap prize winner, is designed with a modular architecture to minimize non-recurring engineering for third-party customers.
By diversifying between internal production and high-margin customer services, Helogen aims to transition from a research-focused entity into a primary supplier for the global medical technology market.
