The facility sustained severe structural and electronic damage during Typhoon Mawar, a Category 4 storm that struck the territory in May 2023. STRATEGIC RECOVERY

The Guam station is a key component of the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS), which provides near-continuous communication between orbiting spacecraft and Earth. Following the storm’s impact, the site faced power failures, water damage, and significant antenna misalignment. Engineers from the Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) program conducted extensive repairs to the site’s large-scale radomes and internal telemetry hardware.

OPERATIONAL STATUS

Final testing has confirmed that the station is fully integrated back into the global network. The restoration ensures that high-priority missions—including the International Space Station (ISS) and various Earth-observing satellites—maintain redundant communication paths.
