San Francisco-based Astranis has officially pivoted into the Space Domain Awareness (SDA) sector. According to SpaceNews, the manufacturer unveiled its new Perceptor spacecraft on August 13, marking a strategic expansion from its established microGEO communications business into orbital reconnaissance.

Built on the company's proprietary microGEO platform, Perceptor is a lightweight satellite—weighing hundreds of kilograms compared to multi-ton legacy units—equipped with high-fidelity sensors and electric propulsion. This propulsion system allows the unit to maneuver autonomously across the geostationary belt to inspect or track foreign assets.

Operational Parameters

Perceptor is designed for high-mobility surveillance. Key operational capabilities include:
- Close-Proximity Flybys: High-resolution inspection of target satellites.
- Swarm Intelligence: Multiple Perceptor units can coordinate to eliminate blind spots, making it difficult for targets to evade observation.
- Dual-Use Functionality: The platform supports both commercial reconnaissance and government defense missions.

Strategic Context

The U.S. Space Force has increased its focus on the geostationary belt, citing growing maneuverability from adversarial nations. Astranis CEO John Gedmark emphasized that the platform aims to eliminate tactical blind spots that could be exploited in a conflict. This reveal follows a $450 million funding round in May, intended to scale manufacturing for government procurement.

Astranis is currently one of 14 companies selected to compete for the Space Force's Andromeda contract, which supports the RG-XX next-generation surveillance constellation. The move signals a shift in the micro-satellite market toward active defense and orbital policing.
