Firefly Ramps Production Amid Launch Cadence Deficit
Firefly Aerospace reports peak hardware production for its Alpha rocket but faces schedule slippage for its inaugural Block 2 flight and medium-lift Eclipse vehicle.

Production Surge Meets Operational Lag
Firefly Aerospace is accelerating hardware manufacturing despite a stagnant launch frequency. During an Aug. 11 earnings call, CEO Jason Kim confirmed that production of the Alpha launch vehicle has reached an all-time high, driven by what he described as unprecedented global demand for orbital access.
According to SpaceNews, the Texas-based company is prioritizing the ramp-up of Alpha—a small-lift vehicle capable of delivering one ton to LEO—alongside the development of the medium-class Eclipse rocket. However, the surge in manufacturing floor activity has yet to manifest on the launch pad. Firefly has conducted only seven Alpha missions since 2021, with its most recent flight occurring in March.
Manifest Slips and Block 2 Upgrades
Scheduling remains volatile. The debut of the Alpha Block 2—featuring stretched stages and subsystem improvements—has slipped from late summer to the fourth quarter. Firefly now expects to complete only one more mission after Flight 8 this year, a reduction from the two projected earlier this spring. The company remained tight-lipped regarding its 2027 manifest, though Kim noted that the majority of capacity is already booked.
Hardware Outlook
The slow cadence has already impacted major contracts. A responsive launch mission for True Anomaly’s Jackal spacecraft was reassigned to a SpaceX rideshare due to timing constraints, though the contract remains valid for future operations. Meanwhile, Lockheed Martin has extended its agreement with Firefly through 2031, securing options for up to 25 launches.
Work continues on the Eclipse vehicle in partnership with Northrop Grumman. Recent milestones include a 226-second mission-duty-cycle test of the Miranda engine. Eclipse is currently slated for a debut no earlier than 2027, targeting the U.S. Space Force’s National Security Space Launch requirements.
