European launch startups are tightening the funding gap with their U.S. counterparts. According to Payload, two major players—Spain’s PLD Space and Germany’s HyImpulse—have successfully closed extension rounds to accelerate the continent’s sovereign orbital access.

PLD Space: The Industrial Push

PLD Space has secured a €108M ($125.1M) Series C extension, led by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation with support from COFIDES and the Spain Oman Private Equity Fund. This brings the company’s total capitalization to €488M. The capital is earmarked for the industrialization of the MIURA 5 launch vehicle. PLD aims to reach a cadence of 30 annual launches by 2030, with an orbital test flight scheduled for late 2026 from French Guiana. The firm is also looking toward heavy-lift variants, including the MIURA Next and Super Heavy series.

HyImpulse: Hybrid Efficiency

Germany’s HyImpulse closed a €50M+ ($57.9M) Series A extension co-led by JOIN Capital and Ace Capital Partners. Total funding for the 2018-founded firm now exceeds €125M. Unlike its Spanish counterpart, HyImpulse is focused on small-lift cost efficiency using a paraffin-based hybrid engine. Its second suborbital SR75 test flight is slated for late 2024 at SaxaVord, with the orbital SL1 targeting a 2027/2028 debut.

Market Divergence

While both firms are scaling, their trajectories differ. PLD Space is moving toward high-mass infrastructure, while HyImpulse targets the low-cost small-sat market with a price floor of €10,000 per kg. Demand remains robust across the board; PLD is booked through 2027, and HyImpulse reports over €350M in commitments for its SL1 vehicle. The data suggests Europe is moving away from internal competition and toward a highly differentiated launch ecosystem.
