According to European Spaceflight, this procurement focuses on the development and deployment of commercial cargo services to Low Earth Orbit (LEO), ensuring European sovereign access to orbital logistics.
MISSION PROFILE: NYX
The central component of this contract is the Nyx spacecraft, a modular and reusable orbital vehicle designed by TEC. The vehicle is engineered to transport cargo to the International Space Station (ISS) and future commercial orbital habitats. The contract structures the acquisition as a service-based model, marking a significant departure from traditional ESA procurement where the agency owned the hardware.
STRATEGIC ALIGNMENT
This move aligns with the LEO Cargo Return Service initiative, intended to bridge the gap left by the retirement of the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) and the upcoming decommissioning of the ISS. By fostering a competitive commercial landscape, ESA aims to reduce launch costs while maintaining a high frequency of supply runs.
According to European Spaceflight, the funding will be distributed over several phases, contingent on the achievement of technical milestones. This includes the finalized design, hardware testing, and an eventual demonstration flight.
