ESA Opens BepiColombo Orbit Entry Contest
The European Space Agency is offering the public a chance to witness the historic BepiColombo arrival at Mercury from the ESOC mission control center in Germany.

The BepiColombo mission, a joint venture between the European Space Agency (ESA) and JAXA, is nearing its primary objective: orbital insertion at Mercury. To mark this milestone, ESA has announced a public competition offering access to the inner workings of European space operations.
Access to ESOC
According to ESA, the winner will receive an invitation to the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt, Germany. This facility serves as the nerve center for Europe’s deep-space missions. The selected individual will witness the complex orbital maneuvers and data acquisition real-time as the spacecraft transitions from its long-duration cruise phase into Mercury’s gravitational hold.
Operational Parameters
BepiColombo consists of two primary scientific orbiters: the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) and the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (Mio). Since its launch, the mission has utilized a series of gravity-assist flybys—planetary maneuvers around Earth, Venus, and Mercury itself—to shed velocity. The final arrival represents the culmination of years of trajectory fine-tuning.
Applicants are invited to participate via the official ESA channels. The competition focuses on public engagement with one of the most challenging thermal-environment missions ever conducted by the agency. Mercury’s proximity to the Sun subjects the craft to temperatures exceeding 350°C, requiring specialized heat shielding and mission-specific engineering.
Verification and entry details are available through the ESA Science and Exploration directorate. Successful candidates will gain a terminal-side view of one of the decade's most significant interplanetary events.
