ESA and ISRO Solidify Strategic Space Alliance
The European Space Agency and the Indian Space Research Organisation have signed a comprehensive agreement to expand cooperation in lunar exploration, orbital tracking, and scientific research.

The European Space Agency (ESA) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) have officially entered a new phase of bilateral cooperation. According to ESA, the two agencies have signed an agreement to extend and broaden their long-standing partnership, ensuring continuity in shared orbital and lunar objectives.
The framework, formalised by ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher and ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan, builds upon decades of mutual support. Central to the agreement is the continued provision of ground station support. ESA’s global tracking network will remain critical for Indian missions, providing telemetry, tracking, and command (TT&C) services, while ISRO facilities offer reciprocal assistance for European operations.
Beyond logistics, the scope of the agreement covers deep-space exploration and Earth observation. Key areas of focus include:
- Lunar Exploration: Synchronisation of data and tracking for upcoming lunar sorties.
- Space Science: Collaborative research projects in astrophysics and solar physics.
- Sustainability: Information exchange regarding space debris mitigation and orbital traffic management.
ESA leadership emphasized that this expansion is not merely technical but strategic, positioning Europe and India as primary partners in the evolving global space economy. This alliance strengthens Europe’s reach in the Indo-Pacific region while providing ISRO with a robust gateway to European scientific expertise and infrastructure. The renewal signals a long-term commitment to interoperability in an increasingly crowded orbital environment.
