Operations at Europe’s Spaceport have shifted into high gear with the delivery of two critical Earth observation assets. According to ESA, the Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) and the Sentinel-3C satellite have safely touched down in Kourou, French Guiana. This dual arrival marks a major milestone for the Earth Explorer and Copernicus programs, transitioning from laboratory testing to launch campaigns.
The Mission Specs
FLEX is a specialized science mission designed to map global vegetation health by detecting the faint glow—fluorescence—emitted by plants during photosynthesis. This data will provide unprecented insight into the terrestrial carbon cycle and plant stress.
Sentinel-3C, part of the Copernicus constellation, is tasked with maintaining the continuity of global sea-surface and land monitoring. It carries a suite of instruments to measure topography, temperature, and ocean color, reinforcing the robust data stream required for climate security and environmental management.
Integration Sequence
Both spacecraft are currently undergoing post-transport inspections. Engineers will now begin the final preparation and fueling phases. Per ESA protocols, these satellites are slated for deployment aboard the Vega-C launcher. The mission profile requires Sentinel-3C to stabilize Copernicus data availability, while FLEX will fly in tandem with other Sentinel assets to synchronize multi-spectral observations.
