The European Space Agency (ESA) has successfully executed the dual deployment of the FLuorescence Explorer (FLEX) and the Sentinel-3C satellite. According to the ESA YouTube official broadcast, this mission represents a strategic expansion of the Copernicus program and European Earth observation capabilities.
Primary Mission: FLEX
The FLEX mission introduces a specialized payload designed to monitor the faint glow emitted by plants during photosynthesis. Unlike traditional multispectral imagers that observe vegetation health via color reflectance, FLEX detects solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence. This data allows scientists to gauge the actual metabolic activity and health of global vegetation in real-time, providing an early warning system for plant stress caused by drought or nutrient deficiency.
Continuity: Sentinel-3C
Operating as a critical node in the Copernicus constellation, Sentinel-3C serves to maintain the continuity of ocean and land monitoring. It joins its predecessors (3A and 3B) to provide high-frequency data on sea-surface topography, ocean and land temperature, and ocean color. The synchronization of these satellites ensures that global datasets remain uninterrupted, a requirement for climate modeling and environmental policy enforcement.
Technical Synergy
The mission profile leverages the proximity of both satellites in orbit.
