ESA has successfully deployed the FLEX Earth Explorer and Sentinel-3C satellite into orbit, significantly upgrading Europe's Earth observation network and biological monitoring capabilities.

Mission Overview
ESA has confirmed the successful orbital insertion of two major Earth-monitoring assets: the Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) and the Sentinel-3C satellite. This dual-launch deployment strengthens the European Copernicus program and expands the scientific data available for terrestrial biological analysis.
FLEX: Advanced Biosphere Monitoring
According to ESA, the FLEX mission is the first of its kind, designed specifically to detect and measure the faint glow emitted by plants during photosynthesis. This "solar-induced fluorescence" provides a direct indicator of photosynthetic activity. By capturing this data, FLEX allows scientists to assess the actual health and stress levels of vegetation globally, moving beyond traditional greenness indices to evaluate functional plant physiology from space.
Sentinel-3C: Operational Continuity
Joining its predecessors in the Copernicus constellation, Sentinel-3C ensures the continuity of high-revisit Earth observation data. The satellite is equipped with a suite of instruments to monitor ocean color, sea- and land-surface temperature, and sea-surface height. Its deployment is critical for climate monitoring and maritime safety, providing the high-frequency telemetry required for accurate global forecasting.
Synergistic Data Acquisition
The proximity of these two satellites in orbit is intentional. Operating in tandem, FLEX and Sentinel-3C will provide a multi-layered view of the Earth's surface.
